Chapter 757. How Rich People Completes Tasks
Chapter 757. How Rich People Completes Tasks
Just like every other day, Chen Hu sat behind the registration desk of the Mission Hall and processed one task after another. Although he was an Inner Disciple of the Dark Forest Society, his cultivation talent was average and his background ordinary. Working in the Mission Hall was considered a good assignment. The sect paid contribution points every month, the work wasn’t particularly dangerous, and he could occasionally meet interesting disciples. Most importantly, there was no need to risk his life outside hunting beasts or gathering herbs.
At this moment, Chen Hu was reviewing a completed mission.
"You have already dealt with the murderer hiding in West Lake Village. The mission is considered complete." Chen Hu examined the evidence before nodding. "According to sect rules, the criminal’s belongings will be confiscated. Their value will be assessed and additional contribution points will be awarded accordingly."
The outer disciple across from him nodded happily.
Chen Hu quickly recorded the completion and transferred the reward.
"Next."
The disciple left while another person approached the counter.
The moment Chen Hu saw the newcomer, he immediately recognized him
The newcomer who had accepted the Dark Snail Shell mission few hours ago.
Chen Hu couldn’t help feeling slightly surprised. The mission had only been accepted a short while ago. In his opinion, Tyler had probably come to cancel it.
After all, Dark Snails were not easy to find.
Many outer disciples spent several days wandering through swamps before gathering enough shells.
Looking at Tyler, Chen Hu sighed sympathetically.
"Junior Brother, there’s no need to feel embarrassed. Many newcomers overestimate themselves when choosing missions. If you wish to cancel the mission, the sect won’t return the deposited contribution point, but you may choose another task afterward."
Tyler blinked. Then he smiled, "Senior Brother misunderstood."
As he spoke, he placed a cloth bundle onto the table. Chen Hu frowned slightly before opening it. The next moment, his eyes widened. There are Dark Snail Shells.
Not one or two. Exactly Twenty of them.
Twenty complete Dark Snail Shells were neatly wrapped inside the cloth.
Chen Hu immediately picked up Tyler’s token and opened the registration records.
After confirming the mission details, he counted the shells once more with a glance. The quality was good.
"That was fast..." Even Chen Hu couldn’t help muttering under his breath. He had expected this junior brother to fail.
Instead, the young man had completed the mission almost immediately. Suppressing his surprise, Chen Hu quickly completed the registration process.
"The mission has been verified. Twenty Dark Snail Shells. Quality acceptable." His fingers moved across the formation plate. "The reward is forty contribution points. Together with the one-point deposit being returned, the total is forty-one contribution points."
The token flashed slightly. Forty-one contribution points were added.
Tyler smiled and cupped his hands, "Thank you, Senior Brother."
Chen Hu handed the token back, "No need to thank me. This is simply my job."
After a brief pause, he suddenly asked, "My name is Chen Hu. What is Junior Brother’s name?"
"Tyler White. You can call me Tyler."
"Junior Brother Tyler." Chen Hu smiled. Then curiosity got the better of him.
"If you don’t mind, how did you gather them so quickly? Of course, if it’s a secret, you don’t need to answer."
Tyler thought for a moment. Then he smiled, "Because I’m a little rich."
Chen Hu froze. Tyler simply cupped his hands and left. Watching the departing figure, Chen Hu eventually nodded to himself. That explanation actually made sense.
Every year, wealthy disciples joined the sect. Some directly hired others to complete missions on their behalf. As long as the mission itself wasn’t restricted, nobody cared how it was completed.
"Must be one of those rich young masters."
Chen Hu didn’t think about it further. The shells would eventually be sent to the Pill Hall anyway. Whether Tyler gathered them personally or purchased them was irrelevant to him. Soon another disciple arrived and Chen Hu returned to work.
Meanwhile, Tyler didn’t head back to his cave. Instead, he walked toward the mission wall once again. After browsing for a while, he selected another mission and returned to the counter.
Seeing him again, Chen Hu laughed.
"Already taking another mission?"
Tyler nodded.
Chen Hu quickly registered it.
A moment later, Tyler left the Mission Hall once again. This time, however, someone was already waiting outside.
"Ah! Tyler!"
A tall figure waved enthusiastically. It was Maximus. The dark-skinned youth quickly walked over with a bright smile on his face. "What a coincidence."
Tyler smiled, "It really is."
Maximus appeared completely unaware that he was terrible at pretending.
Tyler had already guessed that the fellow was waiting for him. Still, he didn’t expose it. He was curious about what Maximus wanted and why he had gone out of his way to approach him.
Maximus casually placed an arm around Tyler’s shoulder and began walking alongside him.
"I accepted a task in the Weapon Forgery Hall. Just doing some simple chores. What about you?"
"Gathering wild berries." Tyler answered casually.
Maximus immediately frowned. "That sounds dangerous."
"Dangerous?"
"The forests outside aren’t exactly safe." Tyler shook his head, "I’m not planning to go deep inside. Just the outer areas."
Hearing that, Maximus relaxed slightly.
The two chatted as they walked.
Eventually, Maximus led him toward the cafeteria.
Tyler noticed the direction but said nothing.
Sure enough, before they reached the entrance, two figures suddenly stepped forward and blocked the path.
Both wore outer disciple robes. Both had pale complexions.
Tyler immediately recognized them.
The same senior disciples who had been eyeing him since his first day. Yeah Tyler already noticed them.
"Oh?" One of them grinned, "Look who we have here."
The other senior immediately laughed, "A new junior brother."
Maximus awkwardly lowered his head.
Tyler finally understood why Maximus had appeared so enthusiastically today.
The two senior disciples examined him from head to toe before one of them stepped forward.
"Junior Brother, since you’ve joined the sect, shouldn’t you show some respect to your senior brothers?"
The other nodded seriously.
"That’s right. When newcomers arrive, it’s tradition to invite their seniors for a meal."
"Tradition?" Tyler asked.
"Of course."
The senior disciple smiled warmly.
"Didn’t Maximus do the same thing?"
The moment those words were spoken, Maximus’ expression became even more awkward.
Tyler immediately understood everything. So that was what happened. No wonder Maximus looked as though he wanted to say something but didn’t know how.
The poor fellow had probably suffered the same fate.
One senior disciple patted Maximus on the shoulder, "Junior Brother Maximus was very sensible. He voluntarily invited us to eat. A good example for newcomers."
Maximus nearly coughed blood.
Voluntarily?
The five contribution points he lost certainly didn’t feel voluntary.
Looking at the smiles on the faces of the two senior disciples and then at the helpless expression on Maximus’ face, Tyler finally understood the situation completely.
These two weren’t robbing people. They weren’t extorting contribution points directly.
Instead, they used the excuse of seniority and sect traditions to make newcomers spend their own contribution points treating them to meals.
The method wasn’t illegal. It wasn’t against sect rules. Yet somehow it was even more shameless. Tyler couldn’t help admiring their creativity.
"Alright... let’s go, Senior Brothers," Tyler said with a smile.
The two senior brothers and Maximus were all stunned for a moment. None of them had expected him to agree so readily. Most newcomers would either try to refuse awkwardly or reluctantly follow along while feeling unhappy inside. Tyler, however, looked completely relaxed, as though he was genuinely inviting old friends out for a meal.
A few minutes later, the group was seated inside the cafeteria with several dishes spread across the table.
"My name is Tyler White. Senior Brothers can just call me Tyler," he said while taking a seat.
"I am Lee, and this fellow is Louch," Lee replied as he happily stuffed food into his mouth.
Louch nodded and raised his wine cup before taking a large gulp of rice wine. Maximus sat beside Tyler, eating quietly. He hadn’t expected Tyler to include him in the treat as well. Originally, he thought he would just be standing nearby awkwardly while the three of them ate.
"Senior Brother Lee. Senior Brother Louch." Tyler greeted them politely.
Louch was already slightly drunk after several cups of wine. He patted his chest and laughed loudly. "Junior Brother, if anyone bullies you in the future, just come find us. We may not be important figures in the sect, but we can still help with some small matters. If you need anything, feel free to ask."
Lee almost rolled his eyes.
He knew Louch was just saying polite words after eating someone else’s meal.
Unexpectedly, Tyler immediately nodded.
"Well, I actually do have a small request."
Lee paused midway through chewing.
He had only been speaking out of courtesy. He didn’t expect Tyler to take the invitation seriously.
"Oh? Tell us," Louch said before Lee could stop him.
Tyler smiled and said, "I need some Wet Blossom Berries. Enough to complete a mission."
Lee frowned.
"You want us to help complete your mission?"
His voice rose slightly. It sounded as though they had suddenly become this junior brother’s hired workers.
Tyler didn’t seem embarrassed at all. Instead, he calmly placed a small pouch of silver onto the table.
The moment the pouch landed, Louch’s eyes lit up.
"Deal."
He grabbed it before anyone else could react.
Lee immediately regretted being slow.
Seeing this, Tyler casually placed another pouch in front of Lee.
"Senior Brother Lee can help Senior Brother Louch gather them faster."
Lee stared at the silver pouch for several seconds.
Spirit stones were naturally more valuable than mortal currency, but that didn’t mean silver was useless. Low-level cultivators often dealt with mortals, and many still had mortal families to support. Extra silver was always welcome.
A moment later, Lee quietly pulled the pouch toward himself.
"Since Junior Brother is asking so sincerely," he said with a cough, "it would be rude for us to refuse."
