Chapter 208: God of Traffic Jams
Since today was the first day of the National Day holiday, it marked the peak of travel and homecoming across the country. To get home early, the two of them set out ahead of time.
Even though they ran into Rushuang Empress at Lin Mo’s place, it didn’t delay them for long—barely ten minutes later, they were already downstairs. During that time, Cousin Su He had even managed to give Liu Rushuang a thorough scolding—her sense of timing was impeccable.
In the car, Su He put on her sunglasses, looking cool and detached, driving along leisurely and carefree.
“Xiao Mo, with the way you look now, will Second Aunt even recognize you? What if she doesn’t let you in the house?” Cousin Su He teased while driving.
She deliberately avoided mentioning Liu Rushuang. She knew perfectly well that whether things would work out between the two didn’t depend on her cousin—it depended on Liu Rushuang. All she needed to do was put a little pressure on her.
She had to act like she disapproved. Only then would Liu Rushuang feel that being with Lin Mo was a thrilling little act of rebellion.
And she couldn’t warn her cousin either. She knew Lin Mo far too well—if she made things clear, he would overthink it and mess everything up.
Once Lin Mo became aware of someone’s intentions, he would start acting unnatural. To put it simply, he’d start interacting with a purpose.
But Liu Rushuang? She was sharper than a monkey—she could sense in an instant whether someone had hidden motives.
What made her interested in Lin Mo right now was his simplicity. He hadn’t graduated yet, didn’t have any schemes, and posed no threat to her. That made her feel safe. If Su He exposed anything, Lin Mo would surely act differently—and that would ruin everything.
So, it was better to let things develop naturally. The progress so far was quite good anyway—Liu Rushuang had already come over secretly to stay with him. Once it happened once, it would happen again. Having a baby would just be a matter of time.
Su He might not fully understand human nature, but she understood Liu Rushuang better than anyone. She could see right through all of her little schemes.
Hearing her teasing, Lin Mo rubbed his forehead helplessly. “Should be… fine, I guess. After all, that’s my mom.”
Even he didn’t sound too confident. His appearance really had changed quite a bit lately.
Judging by how people like Wang Chu and Sichuan Girl had reacted, he knew this homecoming wouldn’t go smoothly. The last time he met Su He—after just one day of using that facial cleanser—she could barely recognize him. Now that he was in his “complete form,” it was even more dramatic.
And the changes weren’t just in his face—his whole aura, his fashion sense, even his voice were different.
Those Poria Throat Lozenges didn’t just clear his lungs; they also made his voice clearer. He hadn’t noticed it himself, and those around him didn’t either—probably because they saw him every day—but when he went home, the sudden difference in both his looks and his voice would surely be startling.
“Ah? You haven’t video-called Second Aunt lately to give her a heads-up?” Su He asked in surprise.
After all, she herself had once video-called her mother just to show off, only to get scolded for being vain—“You’re still single; what good is looking pretty?”
Men were different from women. Women could hide behind makeup, so their changes weren’t as obvious. But Lin Mo’s transformation was like getting a new head—especially after being styled by Liu Rushuang.
“No, we usually just talk on the phone. Hardly ever video call,” Lin Mo replied, shaking his head.
It had only been about a month or so anyway—who could’ve expected such a drastic change?
“Then you’ll have a lot of explaining to do this time. By the way, how many days off do you get?” Su He asked.
Lin Mo said, “Including the Mid-Autumn Festival, nine days in total. But you know, Cousin, I’m in my senior year. There’s nothing to do at home. Holidays don’t really mean much to me, haha.”
“Get outta here. Trying to make me jealous, huh? I only get seven days off in total. Counting travel, that’s five days at home. And I have to go on blind dates. Just thinking about it gives me a headache,” Su He sighed helplessly.
“Blind dates? You?”
“Yeah, what’s with that look? Sure, I think I’m still young, but my mom doesn’t agree. She’s been nagging me non-stop these past two years. I envy you—you’re young, carefree, and loaded.”
Su He wasn’t that old herself, but she was at that “marriageable” age. It was natural for elders to worry. Lin Mo, on the other hand, didn’t have that problem. His family had never even brought it up.
“At best, I’ve got some free time. Can’t say I’ve got money,” Lin Mo said, pouting.
Su He smirked. “You call that broke? You haven’t even graduated yet, but you’ve got a million in your account and a watch worth tens of thousands. I’ve been working for years and can’t compare to you.”
Her info was already outdated. Lin Mo’s savings had long surpassed that. If she found out, she’d probably lose her mind.
“My money’s nothing compared to people like Liu Rushuang or Sister Yuan. They’re the real rich ones. I’d love to achieve financial freedom someday,” Lin Mo said wistfully.
Su He chuckled. “True enough. Liu Rushuang really does come from money. But hey, you’ve got a shortcut. She loves staying at your place, doesn’t she? If you can turn pretend into real, you’ll never have to worry about money again. Then your dear cousin here can bask in your glory—make her call me Cousin!”
“Turn pretend into real? No way. Being with her would be way too stressful. You’ve got to compete with men and women for her. What kind of masochist would I have to be to put myself through that? What guy could stand having his girlfriend constantly coveted by everyone—men and women alike?” Lin Mo rolled his eyes.
Su He burst out laughing. Fair point. Liu Rushuang’s charm really was something else.
Just then, Lin Mo noticed that their route wasn’t heading toward the highway. “Cousin, we’re not taking the highway?” he asked.
“Highway? You forgot last year? We got stuck for five hours! It’s not even that far—let’s just take the backroads. Drive a little faster, and we’ll be home in two hours. Let those ‘smart folks’ take the highway!” Su He shot him a look and grinned.
They were both from South City, not far from Jiangning. The high-speed train took just over half an hour, and driving on the highway took about an hour. Taking the backroads would take two, maybe three hours tops—not bad.
“Battery’s full, snacks and drinks ready, seatbelts fastened, system check complete. Time to go! Xiao Mo, play us some tunes. Connect to the Bluetooth—we’re going home!”
Lin Mo nodded. “Connected!”
Soon, their white Zhiji L6 sped down the road toward South City. The siblings sang along and sipped their drinks, enjoying the ride.
Two hours later, on the national road to South City, traffic stretched endlessly in both directions. Their car was sandwiched between two massive trucks—small, helpless, and pitiful.
Lin Mo sighed. “This was your plan? You said all the smart folks would take the highway and that the backroad would be clear!”
Su He scratched her head. “Uh… maybe they thought the same thing!”
Lin Mo: …
“So basically, you’re the smart one, huh? Last year on October 1st you took the highway—it jammed. This year you took the backroad—it’s jammed too. You’re the God of Traffic Jams!”
Su He: …
“How was I supposed to know they’d think like me? Anyway, no big deal. We’ve got air conditioning and snacks. We’ll just wait it out. No way it’ll be five hours again!”
Before she could finish, Lin Mo quickly covered her mouth. “Don’t jinx it! Turn off the AC. This is an electric car. If we run out of power, we’ll have to call a tow truck!”
