Chapter 191 -
Chapter 191 -
The room remained quiet after Wei Meilan agreed to help.
For a moment, neither of them spoke. Then Fu Sheng sat down across from her. His expression remained calm, but the questions that followed became far more detailed.
"We’ll start from the beginning," he said. "Tell me about the people closest to Bao Li."
Wei Meilan lowered her eyes briefly before answering.
"His most trusted men are not the ones people see every day. Bao Li likes to keep his strongest cards hidden. The men guarding outside tonight are only part of what he has."
Fu Sheng nodded. "How many men would follow his orders without hesitation?"
"At least thirty."
A slight frown appeared on his face.
"Only thirty?"
Wei Meilan looked at him and calmly explained, "Thirty loyal men. The rest follow him because they fear him."
That answer made Fu Sheng thoughtful. Fear was useful, but it was also unstable. The moment people sensed weakness, fear often disappeared.
"What about the wedding?" he asked.
Wei Meilan leaned back slightly. "He plans to arrive late."
Fu Sheng immediately noticed something important.
"Why?"
"Because he likes making people wait."
A look of disgust flashed across her face.
"He enjoys seeing people nervous. He thinks it proves his importance."
Fu Sheng silently stored the information away.
"Will he come directly?"
Wei Meilan shook her head.
"No. He’ll probably stop outside first and send men ahead."
"To inspect the area?"
"Yes."
Fu Sheng lightly tapped the table.
"How many?"
"Five to ten."
His eyes narrowed slightly. That was troublesome. If Bao Li sent scouts ahead, it would complicate things.
"What about escape routes?"
Wei Meilan answered immediately.
"He always prepares at least two."
Fu Sheng was not surprised. A man like Bao Li would never place himself in a situation without a way out.
"Tell me."
Wei Meilan pointed toward the table as though drawing an invisible map.
"If the wedding takes place where he originally planned, his first escape route will be the southern road."
"Why?"
"It leads directly toward Tiger Alley territory."
Fu Sheng nodded.
"And the second?"
"The river path."
That answer immediately caught his attention.
"The river?"
Wei Meilan nodded.
"He keeps boats hidden there.. Due to such power though in the barren lands he still always has a way of leaving."
Fu Sheng fell silent. That information alone was worth tonight’s trip. If Bao Li escaped into the river system, finding him later would become much harder.
And the fact that he has such power and connection.. he and Su Long definitely shouldn’t underestimate him.
"We’ll have to block both routes."
Wei Meilan looked at him.
"You sound very confident."
Fu Sheng’s expression remained calm.
"I prefer being prepared."
For the first time during the conversation, a faint smile appeared on Wei Meilan’s lips. She seemed slightly more relaxed.
Then Fu Sheng asked another question.
"What is Bao Li most afraid of?"
The smile immediately vanished.
Wei Meilan lowered her eyes. Several seconds passed before she finally answered.
"Being betrayed."
Fu Sheng stared at her quietly.
She laughed softly, but there was no amusement in the sound.
"He trusts no one. Not his men. Not his allies. Not even the people closest to him."
Her voice grew quieter.
"Sometimes he wakes up in the middle of the night just to check whether people are lying to him."
The room fell silent.
At that moment, Fu Sheng finally understood something. Bao Li was not merely cautious. He was paranoid, and paranoid people often made mistakes.
"What about you?" Fu Sheng asked.
Wei Meilan looked at him.
"What about me?"
"Does he trust you?"
A bitter smile appeared on her face.
"He thinks he does."
The answer told Fu Sheng everything he needed to know.
The candle flickered quietly as the night outside remained still.
After a while, Fu Sheng asked one final question.
"If Bao Li realizes something is wrong on the wedding day, what will he do first?"
Wei Meilan did not hesitate.
"He’ll run."
That answer surprised him slightly.
"He won’t fight?"
"No."
Her voice was firm.
"Bao Li values his own life more than anything else. He’ll abandon everyone if he thinks it will save him."
The room became quiet once more.
Eventually, Fu Sheng leaned back slightly. Between the information about the scouts, the hidden boats, the escape routes, and Bao Li’s habits, he had already learned far more than he expected.
Wei Meilan noticed the change in his expression.
"I’ve told you everything useful I know."
Fu Sheng nodded.
"You’ve helped more than enough."
For the first time that night, genuine relief appeared in Wei Meilan’s eyes. The burden she had carried for months seemed a little lighter.
After discussing a few smaller details, their conversation finally came to an end.
Wei Meilan stood first.
"You should leave."
Fu Sheng nodded. Staying any longer would only create unnecessary risks.
He rose from his seat and walked toward the window. Just before he climbed through it, Wei Meilan called out to him.
"Fu Sheng."
He turned.
Wei Meilan hesitated briefly before speaking.
"If this succeeds..."
Her voice softened.
"Make sure it truly ends."
Fu Sheng understood exactly what she meant. Not simply defeating Bao Li, but ending the fear, the control, and everything that came with it.
His expression remained steady.
"It will."
Wei Meilan held his gaze for several seconds before finally nodding.
Only then did Fu Sheng push open the window and climb outside.
The cold night air greeted him immediately.
The courtyard remained silent as he moved through the shadows, crossed the yard, and reached the outer wall. With a swift motion, he pulled himself up and climbed over it before disappearing into the darkness beyond.
Neither of them noticed the figure hidden beneath the trees some distance away.
Fu Fong stood motionless in the shadows, his eyes fixed on the direction Fu Sheng had gone.
A strange expression slowly appeared on his face.
Because tonight...
He had seen something he was never supposed to see.
...
Fu Fong remained hidden beneath the old tree, not daring to move immediately.
His eyes stayed fixed on the wall Fu Sheng had just climbed over.
The image replayed itself again and again inside his mind.
Fu Sheng sneaking into Wei Meilan’s house.
Fu Sheng leaving through the window.
Fu Sheng avoiding Bao Li’s guards.
A slow smile appeared on Fu Fong’s face.
The humiliation, anger, and resentment that had been tormenting him throughout the night seemed to ease slightly.
He leaned back against the tree trunk and let out a quiet laugh.
"So that’s how it is..."
The respected Fu Sheng.
Sneaking into another woman’s house in the middle of the night... a soon to be married woman at that but why does that name sound familiar "Wei meilan?"
"It can’t be her right?"
Fu Fong’s eyes gleamed.
Perhaps he didn’t know the full story.
Perhaps he was missing something.
But did that matter?
Not really.
What mattered was that Bao Li would certainly be interested.
Very interested.
Especially when that woman happened to be his wife.
Fu Fong slowly folded his arms.
His smile widened.
The wedding day was approaching.
Everyone was busy preparing.
Everyone was celebrating.
And meanwhile, secrets were moving beneath the surface.
"How interesting."
He shook his head softly.
"Fu Sheng... Fu Sheng..."
A cold chuckle escaped his lips.
"You really gave me something good tonight."
The moonlight filtered through the branches above him, casting shifting shadows across his face.
Then he slowly turned his gaze toward the direction of Bao Li’s territory.
The smile on his face became even deeper.
"Bao Li."
His voice was barely above a whisper.
"But I’ll surely give you a nice wedding gift."
Meanwhile,
Inside his room, Fu Teng was preparing to sleep.
The account books he had been looking through earlier were already stacked neatly on the table, and he had just extinguished one of the candles when a knock suddenly sounded against the door.
Knock. Knock.
Fu Teng paused.
At this hour?
His brows furrowed slightly.
Another knock followed.
He walked toward the door and pulled it open.
The moment he saw who was standing outside, surprise flashed across his face.
"Zhao Yue?"
Standing beneath the lantern light was Zhao Yue.
A small bundle of clothes rested in her arms, and there was a somewhat awkward expression on her face as she stood there quietly.
Fu Teng blinked.
Then blinked again.
For a moment, he genuinely thought he was seeing things.
Hadn’t she left only a few days ago?
Why was she standing outside his room in the middle of the night?
His gaze shifted from her face to the bundle she was carrying.
Then back to her face.
His confusion only deepened.
"You came back?"
Zhao Yue lowered her eyes slightly.
Fu Teng frowned.
"What are you doing here?"
His gaze lingered on the bundle again.
"What do you want?"
A brief silence followed.
Then he added honestly,
"Didn’t you leave just a few days ago?"
"Why are you back so soon?"
