Chapter 242 Martial Arts and Intelligence
Chapter 242 Martial Arts and Intelligence
In the shadowy alleyways of the hive world "Herax-Prime," Russell and Lisa walked side by side. Their shadows stretched long in the dim light, and a tense atmosphere filled the air. Lisa held a delicate plasma pistol in her hand, while Russell gripped the "Fire Kirin" and the Blood Drinker entrenching tool tightly, his eyes scanning their surroundings warily.
---
As the two walked through a narrow alley, suddenly, several dark figures leaped down from the rooftops. They were Lisa's former subordinates, now corrupted by Tzeentch, their eyes flashing with an eerie blue light.
"Judge, your path ends here," the leading traitor said with a sneer, the chainsaw sword in his hand emitting a piercing roar.
Lisa quickly raised her gun and fired, but the enemy outnumbered her and her attack was easily dodged. Just as a traitor's chainsword was about to strike Lisa, Russell suddenly rushed forward, his Bloodthirster entrenching tool flashing like lightning as it struck the man's neck.
"Lisa, step back!" Russell growled, standing in front of her.
The traitor's head rolled to the ground, blood splattering onto Russell's power armor. He quickly turned and used "Fire Kirin" to repel another enemy. Lisa seized the opportunity to target the traitor in the distance, her precise plasma beam knocking him down.
After the battle, Lisa, panting, looked at him with gratitude in her eyes: "Russell, thank you. Without you, I might already be..."
Russell shook his head, his tone firm: "We are comrades-in-arms, and protecting you is my responsibility."
---
The two arrived at an abandoned factory, a temporary stronghold of the Tzeentch demon. The factory was filled with traps and runes, and the air was thick with the corrupting stench of the warp.
"Be careful, there might be an ambush here," Lisa whispered a warning.
As soon as the words were spoken, the ground suddenly cracked open, and a gigantic Tzeentch demon crawled out of the fissure. Its body was twisted and terrifying, and its eyes gleamed with a light of intelligence and madness.
“Russell, we have to join forces!” Lisa shouted.
Russell nodded and activated "Imperial Protection." His body was enveloped in a golden light, and his strength and speed instantly increased. He charged at the demon, his Bloodthirsty shovel aimed at its vitals.
Lisa stood at a distance, precisely targeting the demon's weak points with her plasma pistol. Each of her shots was perfectly timed, creating opportunities for Russell to attack.
Finally, Russell cleaved the demon's core with a single shovel, and its body transformed into a ball of blue flame, dissipating into the air.
---
After the battle, the two sat in a corner of the factory for a short rest. Lisa took a bottle of water from her backpack and handed it to Russell.
"Have some water, you used up a lot of energy just now." Lisa's voice was gentle.
Russell took the water and nodded. "Thank you."
Lisa looked at him, her eyes filled with a complex emotion: "Russell, you know what? I've always admired you. Your courage and your loyalty make me feel at ease."
A flicker of surprise crossed Russell's face, followed by a smile: "Lisa, you are also my most important comrade-in-arms. No matter what we face, I will protect you."
Their eyes met in the air, as if a silent emotion was flowing between them.
…………
The lower market district of the hive world "Herax-Prime" was crowded with ragged civilians and hurried vendors, the air thick with the stench of rotting fruits and vegetables mingling with the acrid smell of machine fuel. Lisa pulled her hood down low, her gaze quickly sweeping across the stalls on both sides of the street, while Russell followed silently behind her, his Bloodthirsty entrenching tool concealed beneath his coat, and his "Fire Kirin" holster ready to be drawn at any moment.
---
The two stopped in front of a stall selling substandard energy batteries. Lisa pretended to browse the goods, but her fingers lightly traced the edge of the stall—there was a very shallow dent there, shaped like some kind of claw mark. She crouched down, and out of the corner of her eye, she noticed dark blue powder on the sole of the stall owner's boots, the "star embers" commonly used in Tzeentch rituals.
"Boss, did this batch of goods come from the East District?" Lisa asked casually, her fingertip secretly pressing on the dent.
The stall owner's eyes gleamed: "Of course, they're all freshly arrived!"
Lisa stood up and suddenly whispered to Russell in the Tribunal's secret code, "He's lying. The transport pipelines in the East District were corroded and sealed off by acid rain three days ago. This shipment could only have come from the underground channels in the North District—where there are rumors of Tzeentch's activities."
Russell nodded slightly, his muscles tensing.
---
After turning the corner, Lisa suddenly grabbed Russell's arm: "Something's not right. The same copper bells were hanging on the awnings of all three stalls, but the wind was clearly blowing from south to north, and only the bell on the far west side was ringing."
She crouched down, picked up a shard of glass, and twirled it in the sunlight: "See the patterns in the reflection? These are traces of subspace energy erosion... Someone has set up a visual interference field here."
Russell narrowed his eyes, the Bloodthirsty entrenching tool silently sliding into his palm: "An ambush?"
“Not just.” Lisa pulled out her data panel and quickly pulled up the hive city's structural map. “The intersection of these clues—the underground channels in the northern district, visual interference, Starfall…—is the abandoned water treatment plant 300 meters ahead.” She tapped a red dot on the map with her fingertip. “There’s enough space there to hide a small team, and—”
Before the words were finished, an explosion was heard in the distance, and thick smoke rose from the direction of the water purification plant.
---
“They’re forcing us into an ambush,” Lisa sneered. “The explosion is bait; the real killing move is…” Her gaze swept over a leaning apartment building on the street. “The building’s load-bearing columns show signs of recent welding, and all the windows on the top floor have been deliberately sealed off—the perfect sniper nest.”
Russell followed her gaze and indeed saw a metallic glint flash through the crack in the third-floor window. He lowered his voice: "You go around to the back alley, I'll take care of the sniper."
“No,” Lisa pressed his arm down. “They have at least four crossfire points. A direct assault would trigger a chain reaction.” She removed the Inquisitor’s badge and shoved it into Russell’s hand. “Go to the Servant Repair Station on Seventh Street and insert the badge into the third terminal—that’s the Inquisition’s emergency protocol node.”
Twenty minutes later, a piercing alarm suddenly sounded on the city's public address system:
"Toxic gas leak detected in the underground channel of the North District! All residents must immediately evacuate to the upper-level shelters!"
--
Panic gripped the crowd. The Tzeentch cultists lying in ambush at the water treatment plant and apartment building were forced to act prematurely, only to lose their target in the chaos. Lisa stood on the top floor of the maintenance station, watching the ambushers fleeing in all directions on the holographic monitor, a smile playing on her lips: "Now, it's time for us to close the net."
Russell cut into the battlefield like a ghost. The disorganized enemy was picked off one by one with the Bloodthirster shovel, while the "Fire Kirin's" lasers precisely targeted the leader attempting to regroup. When the last follower fell, he found a runestone engraved with Kayans's mark beside his body.
---
“He deliberately revealed his whereabouts.” Lisa stroked the cracks on the runestone. “Kayans is testing your growth… or rather, testing us.”
Russell wiped the blood from the shovel blade: "So you deliberately triggered the gas alarm to test the waters in return?"
“Smart.” Lisa chuckled. “Now he knows that force alone is not enough to deal with us.”
Their eyes met in the billowing smoke, and a tacit understanding that transcended that of comrades-in-arms quietly began to grow between them.
