Chapter 23 Yang Xiao's Confession
Chapter 23 Yang Xiao's Confession
DAY56
After ten more days of peaceful cohabitation in the villa, even a shut-in like Lu Yuan couldn't hold back any longer.
The radio broadcasts repeated daily about the fall of various areas, the gathering of zombies in different places, and the new security measures implemented at the city center hospital's safe base, urging those who could to go there. However, the government hadn't mentioned any rescue efforts. It seemed that while the safe base had been built, the overall situation for the government and the military wasn't much better.
After all, such an obvious base would definitely attract intelligent zombies to attack it. At this stage, simply protecting the base is a serious problem for the people at the base.
Pei Sihao and Wei Guo sat in the living room, taking stock of their dwindling food supplies. Because the three people in room 1203 would secretly cook for themselves using Lu Yuan's spatial storage, the food they brought back from the supermarket warehouse had sustained them for over a month, but now they were indeed running out of food.
"How about it?"
"How to say?"
Gu Nanfeng had just finished a satellite phone call with someone in Beijing and came downstairs. Pei Sihao looked up at him, and the two asked in unison.
"The situation in Beijing isn't good either. Many facilities and equipment have been destroyed by the zombies, and several small shelters have also fallen." Gu Nanfeng relayed his conversation with Pei Simin. The zombies in Beijing are undoubtedly the most intelligent group in the country right now. So, although Beijing held out for quite a while, it gradually began to lose water and electricity. When water, electricity, and communications are cut off, humans will inexplicably feel fear. Even the most educated group will experience some uncontrollable chaos when faced with such panic. So, the zombies took this opportunity to launch a surprise attack on several small shelters in Beijing.
"This situation is getting worse and worse, and we don't have much food left." Pei Sihao glanced at the courtyard outside the window. There have been a few zombies wandering over these past few days, but not many. Usually, they come by one or two at a time. So Lu Yuan has started to go out with Yang Xiao and Zhong Qiang to practice finishing off the zombies. After all, he said he would be Wei Guo's finisher in the future.
"If we don't let those two know that Lu Yuan has a spatial ability, we'll have to prepare to leave here." Wei Guo arranged all the food on the table according to the amount each person needs per day, which would last for another two or three days.
"Wow, Lu Xiaoyuan's got some skills!" Yang Xiao and the others took off the raincoats Lu Yuan had prepared for fighting zombies before pushing the door open and coming in. He even gave the newly minted headshot expert Lu Yuan a lot of praise. Seeing the two people and the machine sitting in the living room, and glancing at the piles of food on the table, he narrowed his eyes and asked, "So, guys, where do we go next?"
"You're really clever." Pei Sihao smiled. From his observation over this period of time, Yang Xiao was indeed handling this apocalypse with ease, but he didn't ask or say anything, just like the three of them in 1203, keeping his secret.
"Before deciding on the next step, let's have a frank talk." Gu Nanfeng gestured for the three who arrived later to sit down, handed each of them a bottle of water, and briefly explained the content of his call with the people in Beijing.
"This is just the first wave of mutated zombies. If the zombies evolve later..." Lu Yuan took a big gulp of water and opened a pack of compressed biscuits. He didn't even dare to imagine how terrifying these zombies would be if they evolved, based on his experience from reading apocalyptic novels.
"If zombies can evolve, then we humans should have a way to evolve too, otherwise it's too unfair," Zhong Qiang said casually, chewing on his food until he felt like throwing up.
"You certainly have some ideas." Yang Xiao rolled his eyes at Zhong Qiang, clearly not agreeing with his statement.
"Let's put aside whether the zombies will evolve or not. Our problem right now is that we're running out of food," Pei Sihao said, pointing to the remaining food on the table. "So, I'd like to hear your opinions."
As soon as Pei Sihao finished speaking, Yang Xiao looked at Lu Yuan, who was still slowly chewing on his compressed biscuits, but he didn't seem inclined to say anything. It was obvious that the guys in his dorm wanted to know what secret he was hiding.
“Okay, there’s really nothing to hide.” Yang Xiao took a sip of water and continued, “Actually, I don’t know how to describe it. The night before I decided to leave the dormitory, I had a dream. In the dream, I lived in a zombie world for five years and killed a lot of zombies, so I was quite experienced.”
Yang Xiao gave a wry smile. "I woke up from the dream while I was constantly slashing zombies. At that moment, I felt like I wanted to die. It felt like I was playing a game dungeon. I was almost at the last boss when a save file rolled back, and I had to start clearing all the mobs from the entrance again."
"So you learned how to fight zombies in your dreams?" Zhong Qiang regretted becoming an apprentice; now he felt it was all unreliable.
Yang Xiao rolled his eyes at him and continued, "I didn't meet you guys in my dream. Instead, I stayed in the dormitory for three months. But I never received any government rescue. Then on August 30th, it rained again with the virus. For about a week after that, the outdoor air contained the virus, so the number of zombies increased, and they did evolve."
In Yang Xiao's dream, the safe base in G Province was built on the site of the provincial government's shelter. A week after the viral rain, the safe base was attacked by a large number of ordinary zombies led by an evolved, highly intelligent zombie.
The safe base was hastily constructed and couldn't withstand the hordes of zombies. It quickly fell, making G Province the first provincial-level safe base in China to fall. Yang Xiao was also out of ammunition and food in his dormitory when a surviving unit that had just evacuated from the base was transferring to the S Province base. Passing through the university dormitory area, they stopped at a supermarket to resupply and took him along as he was fleeing in search of food. Thus, Yang Xiao stayed with this unit to survive the apocalypse, fighting zombies for five years.
"If we don't ask today, when are you planning to tell us about the virus rain?" Lu Yuan listened with great interest. Yang Xiao said it was a dream, but in his opinion, it was like he had been given a rebirth script!
"My current experience is completely different from what I dreamed about. I'm not even sure if it will rain." Yang Xiao rubbed his hair in frustration, recalling the dream again. He was still quite upset.
“If it’s a precognitive dream, then it will rain, and the safe base will be breached.” Gu Nanfeng analyzed quietly. “Although you didn’t stay in the dormitory as you dreamed after you woke up, I feel that the events that happened at the key moments in the dream will most likely still happen.”
"So you've been lying low for five years, and none of us humans have evolved any superpowers or anything?" Pei Sihao's focus was certainly different.
Yang Xiao responded with a helpless smile.
“Brother Gu, we still need to go to the safe base. Whether it rains or not, it’s never a bad thing to be prepared.” If he hadn’t known that it would rain the virus again, Lu Yuan would probably have told Yang Xiao and Zhong Qiang about his space and then stayed in the villa for a while longer until the G Province base was more established. Then Gu Nanfeng and Pei Sihao would have been able to return to Beijing with peace of mind.
But now the situation is different. Lu Yuan felt that if he didn't go to the safe base to inform them about the virus rain as soon as possible, the safe base might not have time to strengthen its defenses, just like in Yang Xiao's dream, and would then be unable to resist the zombie horde.
Gu Nanfeng and Pei Sihao exchanged a glance and nodded in agreement with Lu Yuan's suggestion. As for Wei Guo, it had long wanted to go to the safe base to make its mark, but since it was currently holding the team back, it was too embarrassed to bring up the idea itself.
